5 Social Media Predictions for 2020

By on June 14, 2019

It’s hard to believe we are halfway through 2019 already. As we look towards the next year, it’s only natural to predict where technology will take us. Social media is a huge part of that. As social media permeates more and more of our world, it’s interesting to think about how it will continue to change our lives. Here are five social media predictions for 2020:

  1. Video will continue to grow

It’s easy to see how much video has already grown on the different social media platforms. If we look at the data from GlobalWebIndex on social video adoption, we can see that:

  • 56% of internet users use Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter to watch videos
  • One in three social video viewers view videos created by brands each month
  • 81% of 55 to 64-year-olds are watching videos on the internet every month

This area continues to grow as there continue to be more and more mobile-first users. Video is a much easier medium for countries with lower literacy rates. And as more and more people continue to use video in messaging, the possibilities for social video are endless.

  1. Social commerce will become more popular

Social commerce will continue to grow over the next few years. While it’s been slow to take off in Europe and North America, emerging economies will lead the way on social commerce. Instagram is already allowing businesses to build storefronts with visual content. New social media platforms like Holonis offer social commerce as well.

  1. Artificial intelligence will be everywhere

It’s estimated that by 2020, 30% of all B2B companies will use artificial intelligence one at least one of their primary sales processes. Algorithms already influence many aspects of our lives including what products we discover and what content we read. Many of these AI innovations will be helpful to marketers as they eliminate tedious tasks. To prepare for this, marketers can start to use tools that use AI. I also predict that AI will drastically change the way businesses run ads on social media.

VR and AR adoption will be driven by Generation Z

By the end of 2020, we will see much more practical uses of both virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) for marketers. For example, Snapchat has been creating marketing campaigns to influence nearby customers to visit certain stores or attend specific events. Gen Z will be the leaders of this revolution, and many social media messaging platforms will use AR to boost advertising revenue.

  1. Emerging markets will innovate with mobile

Facebook predicts that by 2020, more people will have mobile devices than running water. It is estimated that 3 billion people will gain access to mobile phones by 2020. Mobile will be the only way to access the internet for these users. Messaging apps will become even huger than they already are, giving businesses new ways to communicate with customers.

It’s interesting to think about how the world will look in a year and how social media will continue to change how we interact with one another. With all of these predictions, one thing is for sure. Social media definitely isn’t going anywhere.
