The Big Four: A Look at the Top Social Media Sites- Part One, Linkedin

By on May 27, 2009

Over the next few posts, we’re going to take a brief look at four of the biggest social media sites there are today (Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube), and why you may (or may not) want to be on them.

Linkedin

Linkedin has grown in popularity and size throughout the past few years.  What makes this site so unique among the big four, is its focus on the professional side of life.

Here, you can upload your resumé and create an entire portfolio centered around your career or profession.  You can keep in contact with colleagues past and present, and even offer to write recommendations for them (should you choose).

Beyond the profile, there are groups to join, jobs to search for (or future employees to look at), and company profiles to explore.

So Why Should You Be on Linkedin?

Linkedin is a great place to not only establish who you are as a professional, but as an industry thought leader.  Take the time to join groups that contain not just your industry peers, but potential new clients as well.  Jump into the conversations, provide some valuable insight, and start building relationships.

It’s also a good idea to give your company a profile on there, if only for the search engine rankings (Linkedin is regularly crawled by Google and other search engines and your business profile will jump up higher in search results under your company name, or even possibly your industry.

Next in line…Facebook.
