The Big Four: A Look at the Top Social Media Sites- Part Three, Twitter

By on June 9, 2009

We started this series a couple of posts back, with the intention of giving people who are a new to social media a basic rundown of the biggest four social media sites there are today (though that could very well likely change rapidly, as things tend to do online).  So far we’ve covered Linkedin and Facebook, and why it’s a good idea to consider using them in your social media marketing campaign.  Today, we’ll be talking about Twitter.

First of all, you should know that Twitter, unlike the other three, is strictly a micro-blogging site.  This means that all communications (called Tweets), take place in 140 characters (or less) per tweet – roughly two or three sentences at a time.  Conversations between Tweeps (Twitter + peeps/people) will use the @ symbol followed by the other person’s name like so: @johndoe.  For larger conversations beyond two people, the hashtag (#) followed by a keyword will group all comments into one long thread.

So Why Should You be on Twitter?

Twitter can be used in a few different ways.  DellOutlet, for example, has encouraged thousands of people to follow them by offering specific deals on their products to those paying attention to their tweets.

Other businesses will send out a mix of tweets, some personal, some establishing themselves as an industry thought leader, and some talking about the deals or events going at their website.

Twitter is great for funneling customers along to your other social media profiles or website, and can be used pretty effectively that way.

Up Next…YouTube.
