Digital Marketing Trends That Will Dominate 2019

By on December 17, 2018

2019 is here! And it’s going to be a pretty competitive year for marketers, social media giants, the cosmetics industry, you name it. Being a digital marketer myself, I really wanted an insight into the possible impacts that 2019 could have on my digital marketing strategies.

About a month ago, I met up with an old office colleague. He told me that he’s currently working as an AI developer.

“Artificial Intelligence?” I asked, “I don’t really see it in the near future, in fact, I don’t even think it could have any real-world applications”. I mean, I knew it’s there, I just never saw it getting any bigger.

But of course, I was proven wrong. Not only was I informed about its countless applications, but I was also told that AI has been welcomed by successful businesses as well as marketers.
That wasn’t it, I had to dig deep.

During my research, I found a number of technological advancements that could influence my digital marketing strategies. I’m going to touch just a few digital marketing trends for 2019.

1) Incorporating voice search

Before I start off, first let’s get the statistics out of the way.

  • 40% of adults use voice search at least once a day.
  • 20% of mobile queries are made using voice search.
  • 72% of people use their voice-activated speaker devices in daily routines.
    (according to google reports)

The rate of voice researches has been increasing since 2017, and it’s no surprise that by 2020, 50% of researches will be made by natural conversational languages.

Digital marketers depend on keywords to make their website SEO friendly. However, voice search will strongly impact search engine optimization (with respect to the pattern of searches & user’s requirements).

Normally, when you make a query on Google search, you would type in something like ‘hotels nearby’ or ‘weather forecast’, but, when using natural language, you would say something like ‘are there any hotels nearby?’ or ‘how’s the weather today?’.

Digital marketers will have to optimize their websites according to these digital marketing trends.

Instead of using traditional keywords, digital marketers will have to start using conversational keywords to better optimize their site.

2) Visual Search

Voice search may be on the rise but as the old saying goes, ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’.

In the traditional image search method, users enter a query and in return receive images relevant to the text. Contrary, in visual search, users enter an image as a query and receive information and images relevant to the query image.

Now picture this, you’re sitting on your armchair and you realize that it’s getting a bit shaggy. You take out your smartphone, snap a picture, open your favorite eCommerce site, insert the image and in result you get the perfect products that exceptionally resemble the chair of your dreams. Sounds fun right?

Asides from this, visual search will be used for various purposes. This means that marketers will have to optimize their marketing strategies according to visual search as well.

Digital marketers can optimize for visual search using the following methods:

  • Add multiple images for products and pages.
  • Give descriptive names using target keywords.
  • Increase context for search engines by adding captions.
  • Don’t forget to add related tags.

3) Use of virtual reality in digital marketing strategies

Virtual reality provides a means for escaping the everyday lifestyle and immersing in an entirely new world. Businesses, as well as consumers, are willing to accept virtual reality with open arms.

Here is how virtual reality will impact digital marketing:

  1. Video advertisements
Video advertisements will render a fresh experience to clients and provide an immersive experience. This will allow marketers to effectively reach a target audience.
  2. Evaluate products
Consumers will want to virtually experience a product before purchasing it. Digital marketers can implement virtual reality to connect brands with customers.
  3. Better customer experience
Virtual reality creates an emotional connection between brands and customers, clients feel engrossed and willing to avail products & services. Digital marketers can use this as an opportunity to drive more clients.

4) Use of artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence has been a part of our planet since the dinosaurs roamed the earth, I’m just kidding, it’s been around since 1930 actually.

AI it can be used in health care, space science, education, and now marketing as well.

Marketers want to ‘work smarter not harder’, this has led various businesses to incorporate AI chatbots for driving better results.

Here is why AI is one of the top digital marketing trends:

  • Intelligent advertisements
Artificial intelligence is capable of extracting customer data from their navigation history, interaction with the website, online behavior, purchases and their conversations with the AI itself. Using this data, AI can pull out the likes and dislikes of a customer and direct relevant ads and notifications to individual consumers.
  • Searches
Marketers have to optimize their web content according to the researches made by people. More than 40% of adults use natural language (conversational language) for search at least once a day; This means that marketers will have to optimize their sites to align with the types of voice researches. AI can get that done effectively. AI can better interpret speech and provide authentic results.
  • Chatbots
AI chatbots don’t need lunch breaks or holidays, they can provide 24/7 customer support. As compared to humans, AI can answer a number of customer queries at the same time. This will increase customer engagement, reduce the workload and also reduce the chance of errors.
  • AI assistant
Marketers can leave all the extra work to AI virtual assistants and focus on the bigger tasks at hand. AI virtual assistant can arrange appointments, answer emails, manage schedules, create reminders and much more.

5) Advanced personalization in digital marketing strategies

Every business brings with it an increase in market competition. Your competitors want your customers; they will do whatever it takes to tackle you. One such marketing tactic is ‘personalization’.
Generally, customer’s will be more leaned towards a company that understands their values and treats them like a person rather than a number.
This is why in 2019 digital marketers will have to exclusively focus on their customers.

Here are the strategies that digital marketers can use:

  • Facebook ads
Trust me, almost all of your customers use social media, and I don’t even have to verify that. Facebook offers an excellent opportunity. Digital marketers can openly interact with clients and also direct advertisements to their target audience. Be careful though, excessive advertisement is one of the biggest mistakes made by startups in websites. This applies to digital marketers as well.
  • Email segments
Marketers can extract customer’s data such as recent purchases, favored goods or browsing history and use it to direct relevant messages & newsletters to their customers. Email marketing is a great strategy for personalizing and reaching a wider targeted audience.
  • Incentives
Once you have a customer you want to make sure that the customer becomes a repeating customer. People are more inclined to stay if they feel that you value their wellbeing and are working hard to satisfy them. For this purpose, a simple strategy that digital marketers can use is, provide small incentives or rewards; This way clients will feel special and marketers will have secured their customer.

6) Use of social media

Social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc. play a major role in attracting an audience. These platforms continue to add features that digital marketers can utilize for reaching a larger audience. In 2019, social media platforms will become more integrated with third-party platforms.

  • Live videos
Users are more attracted towards live videos, and if you think about it, it’s actually a pretty useful tool, especially if you’re looking to interact with customers. Marketers better start preparing themselves to go live.
  • Chatbots
Don’t have the money to provide 24/7 customer service? Don’t worry. Chatbots are an innovative social media trend that will allow you to provide customer support at all times.

7) Influencer Marketing
