Is Foursquare For You?

By on March 8, 2011

Foursquare is the hottest social media site to hit the net since Twitter, and its left a lot of people asking the question – is it for me?

Well, for starters, any company that has figured out a way to make daily living fun should attract the attention of businesses. And that’s what Foursquare has done.

Where you are and what you’re doing is the name of the Foursquare game. In fact, the more you do and say about it – the more rewards you’ll get. Imagine managing your social media via your mobile, and setting up on-the-go promotions via Foursquare!

So to reiterate – why should you care, as a social media strategist and business owner? Foursquare already has almost 6 million users, and the sign ups are growing – fast. Location based social networking is in – and here’s why you’ll love it.

1. The Huge Marketing Potential

Businesses are already jumping on the Foursquare bandwagon, and rewarding people that ‘check-in’ to their locations very often. Starbucks for example, will give free coffee to the ‘mayor’ of a specific shop (i.e. the person on Foursquare that checked-in the most). These rewards programs are a great way to pull in business via a mobile social media network.

2. Increased Conversation About Your Business

These location based networks will encourage conversation about your business, and this info can be used as real time market research. When people travel to your shop or office – they have the option of posting information about it, for other people to read.

This information is then used by other Foursquare members to decide whether or not they want to visit your business or use your services. Testimonials on the go, are the way of the future!

3. To Do, Or Not To Do Opportunities

As a business you are allowed to go on Foursquare and create to-do lists for your visitors. By participating in making your shop or office interesting to visit, you open the door for real world, action based competitions or promotions.

For example, drink every flavor of coffee at Starbucks in this particular location, and get coffee free for a week. These real world promotions can be integrated into your social media campaign, and can result in more business, increased sales or greater popularity.

4. Allows For Real Time Promotions

Because Foursquare is used mainly via mobile technology, businesses can now create hype about a special ‘limited-time’ offer that will appear sometime in the next few days. Real word promos? Exactly!

Then, by posting a 50% off sale or another really great special for Foursquare users – and putting the word out via the platform in real time – you can get sudden visitor windfalls, while promoting your business at the same time.

So you see, Foursquare is the future. If it wasn’t, then why are Twitter and Facebook trying to develop their own versions of location based networking right now? This is one site you want to carefully monitor. Take advantage of it, and work it into your strategy. Believe us when we say Foursquare is for you – especially as a business owner.
