Social Media is Here to Stay

Despite how prevalent social media has become over the past few years, many still like to think of it as a ‘passing fad,’ or ‘something for the young folks.’  The truth of the matter, however, is that social media has caused a paradigm shift in our communications with one another.

Really?  A Paradigm Shift?

Well, yes.  Think back to the dawn of the internet and the beginnings of email.  The change was radical; in a matter of moments one could send a note or a file across the world (or to the next room, if that was your thing) instead of taking a few days to send it snailmail.  Social media has taken things even further.  Now, instead of merely passing around notes or files, we can create personalized spaces showcasing our lives, thoughts, creations and more.

Beyond what we can do personally, businesses now have the opportunity to connect with their customers, and build relationships on a greater scale then ever before.  Viral marketing, and positive word-of-mouth create buzz that drives up sales, and powerful search functions on social sites make it much easier for businesses to reach the targeted customers they are looking for, not to mention the unique opportunity they have to address customer complaints and resolve issues quickly.

All the benefits of social media aside, it is unlikely that social media will burn out as a fad, rather, I see it continually evolving and redefining how we do business with each other.
