How to Use Buffer to Share Like a Social Media BOSS

By on September 10, 2013

As social media continues its meteoric rise into mainstream usage and adoption, businesses today have the luxury of being able to choose from an abundance of social tools and applications to share content more effectively.

Since I became a social media manager last year, one of my absolute favorite social media tools I’ve stumbled across though is called Buffer App.

As someone who manages multiple accounts across different platforms, I can not express enough appreciation for the simplicity and efficiency of this scheduling tool.

It makes sharing content extremely easy – often only taking one or two clicks before an article is sent off to the Buffer schedule.

The User Interface (UI) of the App itself is also clean and uncluttered compared to tools like Hootsuite, Social Bro, TweetDeck, and other similar dashboards.

With the addition of browser extensions and integration of analytics insights, Buffer is something you should strongly consider using in your social media efforts.

How to Get Started:

First, you will need to sign up for an account at BufferApp.com under one of the following plans:

  1. Free – Allows you to manage one Twitter, Facebook (page or profile), LinkedIn account (or group), and Google+ page with up to 10 updates in your Buffer schedule.
  2. Awesome – For social media managers with multiple accounts, the “Awesome Plan“ is well worth the $10/month by allowing unlimited posts for up to 12 social profiles, and the ability to add two team members.
  3. Business – This third option is primarily reserved for use by larger businesses and agencies.

Once you have signed up, begin connecting the Social Media Accounts that you would like to include. I particularly like to use Buffer for scheduling Tweets on Twitter as this social network tends to have a higher volume of posts than the others.

Now comes the fun part!

So you’ve just finished reading a great article and you want to share it with your brand’s followers.

All you have to do is select the right social media account, Buffer the webpage, and then it will automatically queue this content into a pre-determined schedule.

Buffer Queue

Tip: Use the ALT + B hotkey from a webpage and it will pop up the Buffer sharing box.

You can either share the article now, post it at a custom time, or simply send it to the bottom of the current queue. Once the post has been added to the Buffer queue, you can drag and drop the post to another time slot or send the post to the top as shown below.

Buffer Content

What’s great about Buffer is that you can highlight text or right-click an image and then Buffer them directly from the webpage – without having to copy and paste or save them to your computer.

Last but not least, you can even monitor the levels of engagement on your posts through Buffer’s built-in Analytics.

Taking Buffer to the Next Level:

While the simplicity of the App is something I praise on a regular basis, don’t let that fool you! Buffer is extremely powerful as well.

Here are a few additional things you can do to get the most out of it.

1) Download the Mobile App and add the Browser extension for Chrome, Firefox, and Safari.

With the Browser Extension add-on, you can quickly schedule a post by clicking the Buffer icon in the top right corner, or if the article has a Tweet button you can use it to open the Buffer box from there.

2) Another benefit of using Buffer, is that you can optimize the sharing of Tweets by using either Followerwonk or Tweriod to analyze when your followers are online.

By running a Follower analysis on your Twitter account, it will give you the best times to tweet on certain days so that you tweet when it makes the most sense  – in order to maximize reach and exposure.

Buffer has partnered with both Followerwonk and Tweriod so that you can integrate these posting times and export them directly to your Buffer account from their sites.

3) While Buffer already offers free analytics insights within its dashboard, social media managers can keep track of additional metrics by using a link-shortening tool such as Bitly.

The images below show how to setup and integrate your Bitly account with your Buffer account, as well as providing insights into the type of analytics that can be provided by combining the two tools.

Social media managers can sort and reorder the statistics by click-through rates or creation date, click on individual URL links to view what type of content is providing the most value, and also view demographic and referral info.

Simplified & Optimized Social Sharing

There are several other benefits and advantages of using Buffer that aren’t covered in this article – such as the use of the Mobile App, integration with news readers, and general content strategy for sharing across different social channels.

However, we hope that this article has provided valuable insights into using Buffer App to make your social sharing more effective and less time-consuming.

If you are currently using Buffer, we’d love to hear how you are using this great tool by leaving us a comment below, and if you have any questions – don’t hesitate to ask!
