What Is LinkedIn and Why You Should Join

By on August 24, 2017

Despite the increased use of technology, it is rare to see professionals from various firms who belong to the same department interact with each other, further they are also unaware of the other’s existence. If this is the case, how can there be any chance for knowledge sharing?  To resolve this issue, steps were initiated, and as a result LinkedIn was successfully founded in December 2002.

LinkedIn was launched a year later on May 5, 2003, after which it did not take long before becoming famous as a social networking site for people who are professionally occupied, in short, it can be said that LinkedIn is the perfect place for professionals to increase their network.

As per the recent reports which have been gathered in May 2017 about LinkedIn, it was seen that there are 467 million users across 200 nations and territories that are using this networking site. The best part about the usage of this LinkedIn is that this networking site is available in nearly 24 languages which include English, Italian, French, Portuguese, German, Dutch, Romanian, Spanish, Swedish, Czech, Turkish, Japanese, Russian, Korean, Malay, Indonesian, Polish and Tagalog.

Based on the reports it can be said that there has been an increase of 63 percent from the previous year when the number of unique visitors for LinkedIn is calculated which is much more than the visits got to MySpace. LinkedIn has been founded by Reid Hoffman along with the team members who belong to firms PayPal and Socialnet.com that include Allen Blue, Eric Ly, Jean-Luc Vaillant, Lee Hower, Konstantin Guericke, David Eves, Chris Saccheri, Yan Punjante, Ian McNish.

After starting LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman held the position of CEO in the firm but after moving on to the position of being Chairman of Board in LinkedIn, now that the CEO position is left empty it is taken up by Jeff Weiner who is LinkedIn’s current CEO.

Though Facebook and Twitter have been given credit for being more famous social networking sites when compared to LinkedIn they have their own share of disadvantages which include lack of profile details on Twitter and Facebook makes it difficult to find people despite being famous demographically.

LinkedIn resembles a directory which has professional and companies to be used by individuals and firms in building their networks, searching for jobs, hiring talent and finding out about the company. It is not really difficult to start using this LinkedIn which can be started off by signing up with LinkedIn after which a profile has to be created either by an individual or company.

LinkedIn has its headquarters in Mountain View of California expanding their offices to Omaha, New York, Chicago, Dublin and London while it is being funded by Greylock, European Founders Fund, Bessemer Venture Partners, Sequoia Capital and Bain Capital Ventures. After LinkedIn has been capable of acquiring profits in 2006 it had a good impact on their investment which summed up to $103 million.

The growth of LinkedIn can be measured by their setup of an International Headquarters at Ireland’s Dublin which got an investment of $20 million from Tiger Global Management LLC with a valuation of about $2 billion. Microsoft’s $26.2 billion acquisition of LinkedIn, which was announced back in June 2016. LinkedIn also has been ranked at the tenth place among the Top 100 List of most valuable startups and currently it is being valued to be $1.575 billion in private markets.

Why Join LinkedIn?

  1. All those who want to get in touch with alumni or their former classmates LinkedIn is the best choice though there is Facebook which is said to revive the lost connections. However, it is the search option available in LinkedIn which keeps the people attracted making them feel this site to be easy and also cooperative in getting the lost connections.
  2. Presence of 900,000 groups gives a better option for all the individuals who want to share their expertise, also this makes LinkedIn the best place to get necessary talent. Further here there is an opportunity to take part in discussions with discussion boards, job posting and news board to keep everyone updated on the developments.
  3. Social networking site also acts as insurance for job holders assuring that they have job opportunities even if there comes a time when they are unemployed. Having employment does not mean that an individual should not have a LinkedIn profile since this will provide sufficient time to develop contacts from recruiters across the industry.

Giving so many services for free might create doubt; however, they have to understand that there are two types of services available with LinkedIn which are free and premium accounts. All those who have chosen to go with free Linkedin accounts will be able to get a full profile of any individual or firm which has been registered for free accounts, this also opens up options to see what is standard among free account holders.

LinkedIn Premium is good for the individuals or firms who want to increase their network by being introduced to 40 at a time, and see extended profiles of 200 users outside the network on each and every single search. With Premium, you can see who’s viewed your profile in the last 90 days. You will get analytics to improve professional presence and you can make contacts outside your contacts. You will also get up to 15 InMail credits to send direct messages to build more powerful contacts.

The strategy followed by LinkedIn cannot be compared with the strategies followed by other social networks since LinkedIn first creates a profile based on which network is developed which goes on to improve the connections and network by recommending the connections were, in turn, it can be asked to recommend you.
